our cat, ember, had her kittens yesterday.

no, i'm none too thrilled...

see, she sort of went into heat--outside--when i didn't know it...

(obviously) before i was able to get her spayed...

but, it is what it is,

and all of that aside,

gosh, they're cute:

the girls *accidentally* got to watch the 7th one be born.

i was letting them look before nap/rest time, because i thought she was done.

they had been so excited all morning long that they could barely focus on school work,

but i didn't want to upset her while she was in labor.

anyway, all of a sudden she started to yowl again and there it was!

they were kind of confused at first, but i started explaining it

and before we knew it, we had covered the functions of an amniotic sac,

umbilical cord and placenta.

home school, yes?

ali even asked to hold "the slimy one" when she woke up from her nap.

yuck.

thankfully, slimy was slimy no more.

ember's a good mommy.

FALLing Leaves

FALLing Leaves--I'm so clever!

We kind of made the letter F last awhile and decided to do some fall things. I already posted about the sugar cookies and there will be more fall things to come, but we finished this one today after getting it painted a couple of days ago:


The paint was pretty much everywhere (on Ali) but where it should be...but isn't that how it goes? I think it's more fun this way, anyway.

"Handmade" Butterflies

The girls and I made handmade butterflies yesterday morning for Art. I traced their hands on some paper, cut them out, and then they were free to paint them. Syd had a lot of fun with it. This project required a little more supervision and so I only did one at a time:



I had to keep Ali out of the paint while Sydney was working on hers.


Ali liked dipping the brushes in the paint and smearing it around. I would put the "wing" under her brush here and there so that it could actually get painted. It was messy, and both hands were busy so I don't have pictures of Ali painting her wings!

Apple Orchard

Our theme for school this week was the letter A. We've studied all kinds of things that begin with the letter A, and today we took a field trip to Steffen's Orchard to pick some apples!

Fingerpainting

For school on Friday, Sydney (and Ali, of course!) got to fingerpaint while I read "Mouse Paint".


It was Ali's first time, and she's always up for making a mess!


Oh, but this mess wouldn't come off of her hands. No fun!


It takes great concentration to perfect a work of art.
